Retirement corpus for ₹50,000 a month at 40

If you are 40, spend ₹50,000 a month today and want to retire at 60, you need about ₹2.69 crore by then. Investing about ₹26,874 a month from now, at 12% a year, gets you there.

Starting at 45 instead raises the monthly investment to ₹39,766.

This assumes no savings yet and no pension. Money already invested, EPF or a pension all lower the monthly figure.

The same return is assumed before and after retiring. A more cautious mix after retirement means a larger corpus.

How this is worked out

First, today's ₹50,000 is grown at 6% inflation for the 20 years until you retire, which makes it about ₹1,60,357 a month by 60. That is the lifestyle the corpus has to pay for.

Next, the corpus has to fund 25 years of those expenses, to age 85, with them rising every year. Because the corpus stays invested, what matters is the gap between its return (12%) and inflation (6%). Discounting the rising withdrawals at that real rate gives the ₹2.69 crore needed on day one of retirement.

Finally, the monthly investment is the SIP that grows to that corpus over 20 years at 12%. Every year of delay raises it sharply, because the money has less time to compound, which is why the same goal costs far more at 40 than at 25.
