How this is worked out
PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited once a year. Depositing ₹1.5 lakh before the 5th of April means it earns interest for all twelve months, so each year the balance grows as (balance + ₹1.5 lakh) × (1 + 7.1%).
Over 25 years that compounding turns ₹37.5 lakh of deposits into ₹1.03 crore. The rate is not fixed for the life of the account: whatever rate is notified each quarter applies to the whole balance, so the real outcome will drift from this figure as rates change.
PPF is EEE: deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh a year qualify for the section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes. The account is locked for 15 years, with partial withdrawals allowed from the 7th financial year and loans from the 3rd.
